Victoria Spa Lodge - Stratford-upon-Avon
Recommended in the Michelin Guide
Following extensive refurbishment of our home, Nicholas and Silvana Monson look forward to having a re-launch of Victoria Spa for paying guests in November. By then, the first phase of re-building, renovation and re-decoration of our historic Grade Two listed house should be completed.
For those who do not yet know it, Victoria Spa is one half of a beguiling William IV mansion. Recorded as a prominent English house by the eminent architectural author Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the building was completed and launched as a hotel in 1837 to support, within its grounds, a newly created spa fed by ancient sulphurated springs.
The eminent Victorian author, Augustus Granville, asserted in 1841 that our springs had long ago attracted visitors and, as such, they would certainly have been known to William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway who lived just a mile away.
One such spring bubbles up into our basement.
Situated in Bishopton, on the edge of Stratford upon Avon, Victoria Spa backs onto the towpath of the Stratford canal. This stretch of water runs a mile South into the centre of town and 42 miles North to Birmingham.

Queen Victoria
In May 1837, six weeks before becoming Queen of the United Kingdom, Princess Victoria opened the spa and spent a night in its hotel. Hence our name. Her Majesty’s coat of arms is embedded within the gables and also within the fire places of the four guest bedrooms on the first floor.
Some fifty years later Victoria Spa became the home of Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959). Bairnsfather was the cartoonist creator of 'Old Bill' and 'Fragments from France' during the Great War. He famously lifted the nation’s spirits during some of Europe’s darkest days. Prints of his famous drawings hang on the walls.
Another illustrious resident was Sir Barry Jackson, the founder of Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
An exhibition about Bairnsfather and his work opened in the  PACCAR Room at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (2nd floor) in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Social Activities
A 30 minute stroll along the canal towpath takes you into the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon. You will enter historic streets, view delightful shops, and be tempted by elegant tea rooms and enticing restaurants. The jewel is the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, where brilliant stage productions are performed by world class actors.
Anne Hathaway's Cottage
A two mile walk in the opposite direction down the canal will take you to farm of Mary Arden. (Shakespeare’s mother). Should you venture further along the towpath you could perhaps get a lift on a passing barge, whose captain might appreciate your muscular assistance with one or two of the 54 locks between Stratford and Birmingham.
Nearby is the Cotswolds, home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. The magnificent Warwick Castle and the spectacular Ragley Hall, seat of The Marquess of Hertford, are less than 30 minutes away.
The home of Anne Hathaway, who the Bard wooed and wed is a mile and a half from Victoria Spa and well worth the pilgrimage.
We have six guest bedrooms all of which are currently being renovated and upgraded. Besides new décor, the lighting will be improved, the carpets changed and new larger televisions installed.
We are reconfiguring and, in some instances, expanding the size of each of the ensuite bathrooms. All of them will be powered now by a superior thermostat system to ensure a more luxurious flow of water.
Drawing Room
As we want to make our guests feel at home, they will be invited to relax in the drawing room area with us. Ancestral portraits and Georgian mirrors adorn the walls. In colder months, we usually have a fire blazing. Our collection of board games is extensive. We have a snooker and pool table.

Victoria Spa for a Party
The drawing room is an excellent venue for a party as it can take up to seventy guests. The new landscaping also allows for a large marquee. This puts us in the market for anyone seeking a well-appointed venue to celebrate a milestone event – from a wedding to a birthday party. Enquiries about booking for such occasions are welcome.
