Victoria Spa Lodge - Stratford-upon-Avon
Recommended in the Michelin Guide
Nicholas and Silvana Monson welcome you to Victoria Spa, formerly the guest house of the inestimable Dreen Tozer into whose elegant shoes we respectfully step.
For those who do not yet know it, Victoria Spa is one half of a beguiling William IV mansion. Recorded as a prominent English house by the eminent architectural author Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, it is rich in history. Royalty, aristocracy, a theatrical impresario and a celebrated artist are among its roster of residents.
Situated in Bishopton, on the edge of Shakespeare’s Stratford, Victoria Spa was constructed in 1835. At the back of our period building is the Stratford canal which winds two miles South into town and 42 miles North to Birmingham.

Queen Victoria
In May 1837, six weeks before becoming Queen of the United Kingdom, Princess Victoria spent a night here and opened the spa as a hotel. Hence our name. Her Majesty’s coat of arms is embedded within the gables.
Some fifty years later Victoria Spa became the home of Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959). Bairnsfather was the cartoonist creator of 'Old Bill' and 'Fragments from France' during the Great War. He famously lifted the nation’s spirits during some of Europe’s darkest days. Prints of his famous drawings hang on the walls.
Another illustrious resident was Sir Barry Jackson, the founder of Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
An exhibition about Bairnsfather and his work opened in the  PACCAR Room at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (2nd floor) in Stratford-upon-Avon.

We will recommend you the best restaurants and pubs in the vicinity for lunch, tea and dinner.
We will help with transport, if required.
Social Activities
Twenty minutes is the time it takes to walk from Victoria Spa down the canal towpath into the heart of Stratford upon Avon. You will enter historic streets, view delightful shops, tea rooms, restaurants and the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, where brilliant stage productions are performed by world class actors.
Anne Hathaway's Cottage
A two mile walk in the opposite direction down the canal will take you to farm of Mary Arden. (Shakespeare’s mother). Should you venture further along the towpath you could perhaps get a lift on a passing barge, whose captain might appreciate your muscular assistance with one or two of the 54 locks between Stratford and Birmingham.
Nearby is the Cotswolds, home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. The magnificent Warwick Castle and the spectacular Ragley Hall, seat of The Marquess of Hertford, are less than 30 minutes away.
The home of Anne Hathaway, who the Bard wooed and wed is a mile and a half from Victoria Spa and well worth the pilgrimage.
Future Plans
At the end of October, Victoria Spa will close so we can carry out some restitution and renovation. We intend to re-open when the works are completed in the second week of December, but don’t hold us to that. We all know the promises of builders, decorators and their anticipated deadlines.
Pleasures in Store
We will be seeking an arrangement with a well-known local fitness club so guests can use their facilities at a discounted rate.
We will be setting up an arrangement for guests to hire bicycles.
Befitting our status as a spa, we will develop a set of services for exclusive female parties so full pampering is delivered, as requested.
We will also be setting up a concierge service for good seats for shows at the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre; specialist trips around the area and themed dinners with distinguished guests.
Other requests will be thoughtfully considered.

Unless they are one of ours, pets are a no (sorry).
Children are most welcome if well-behaved. Definition of well-behaved: not a biter, fighter, whiner, weeper or screamer. As a fond parent, other relative or guardian, you make the fair judgement.
